Don started his show business career at the age of six when he accompanied his older brother Bob to the children's radio program in which Bob sang. When the producer heard that Don could sing too, he had Don audition for the program, Coast to Coast on the Bus. The exposure that Don received led to a part in the national company of Life With Father in 1941. Don toured with the company for three years and has acted ever since.
Don made his Broadway debut in the 1944 production of I Remember Mama.
After working sporadically in theater and television, Don turned to television full time in 1944 playing the ranger in Captain Video until that show's cancellation. He also guest starred in a number of television series including Studio One and daytime dramas A Date with Life and Modern Romances.
In April 1956, Don joined the cast of his first daytime drama, The Edge of Night before he landed the role of Bob Hughes on ATWT.
In addition to his acting ability, Don is a talented writer. In addition to being a member of the Writer's Guild, he wrote scripts for ATWT from 1971-72 and also has written for Guiding Light.
Don has toured with co-star Kathryn Hays in the musical concert act, Hastings and Hayes on Love and they both were cast members of an off-Broadway production of Algonquin Sampler.
Don is married to actress Leslie Denniston whom he met on ATWT. They live in New York state with their daughter, Katharine Scott Hastings (b. 9/23/82). Don also has two daughters, Jennifer and Julie, plus a son, Matthew, from a previous marriage. Don's hobbies include travel and golf.
