Emmy-winning Senior Director Bruce Barry will exit Guiding Light when his contract expires this August. Barry has directed nearly 1700 episodes of Guiding Light during his tenure with the show.
"I have decided the time is right to pursue new projects," Barry says. "My experience with Procter & Gamble Productions during the past 27 years has been an incredible and wonderful journey."
Barry got his start in television in the 1970s as a cue card clerk for the Captain Kangaroo children's program. After of few years of working in various capacities for the show, Barry made his directorial debut. In 1977, he became Associate Director for the soaps Search for Tomorrow and Love of Life. The following year, Barry took on the same job for Guiding Light. In addition, Barry directed shows for Procter & Gamble's As the World Turns from 1979 to 1981 and Texas in 1983.
During his career, Barry has been honored with several award nominations from the Directors Guild of America. In 1985 and 1994, Barry won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series Directing.
"I have always been awed by the professionalism, the craft, and the creativity that the cast and crew brought to the studio," he says, "and of the incredible product they delivered to the screen each day. I'm looking forward to tuning in so that I can continue to enjoy the best production company in daytime television. The friends I have made on this wonderful show are the true measure of success in my career. Guiding Light has been my other home and my second family, and I will miss this historic program more than anyone can imagine."
In related news, senior producer Bobby Kochman, was let go on April 2nd. Following his firing, Kochman sent out a memo to castmembers. However, that memo was yanked from the in-studio mailboxes. Kochman had been a member of the Guiding Light family for 30 years.
