All My Children couple Angie and Jesse Hubbard are getting back together! Well, sort of. Their portrayers, Debbi Morgan and Darnell Williams, will be sharing the screen in an episode of the Fox series Our Kind of People.
Morgan plays the recurring role of Aunt Piggy on the soapy drama that follows Black elite living on Martha's Vineyard, and she reports that she was thrilled to have Williams pop in for a stint (his character is being kept secret until the episode).
"We were shooting the scene when Darnell's character walks through the door for the first time, and it was the first time we see this character on the show, and I looked at him and shouted, 'Jesse!'" Morgan reveals to TV Line with a laugh. "The director had to yell cut and everyone fell out laughing. It was hilarious. I knew that wasn't his name on Our Kind of People but I couldn't help myself. We worked together for so many years as Angie and Jesse and that's the first thing that came to my mind."
Morgan also reports that it was incredibly heartwarming to share the stage with her longtime TV husband once more.
"I was beyond excited to work with Darnell again," she enthuses. "He's like family to me. We always have so much fun because we have such a close-knit relationship. He even gave me away when I married my husband Jeff."
As for how Williams' mystery character might play into story, the January 11 episode of Lee Daniels' sexy and glamorous drama saw Morgan's Aunt Piggy turn herself in for murdering her boyfriend Darius in the 1980s. Could Williams' character be connected to what happened decades ago? Either way, Morgan is hoping that fans tune in, because an increase in ratings is the only thing that will ensure the series gets picked up for a second season.
"We started out shaky but the stories are grounded and popping now and these last two episodes are really, really good," she previews, adding, "Unfortunately, we're not doing well in live broadcasts but we've been killing it streaming on Hulu... I hope Fox is considering that progression and that that's enough to bring us back. Our Kind of People is a part of this new Black renaissance on TV and film that allows us to marinate in our Blackness and celebrate our skin, and our hair, and our culture, and I don't want that to end."
Morgan and Williams' scenes will mark the second time that Our Kind of People has brought soap fans an exciting AMC reunion. Yaya DaCosta, who played Morgan's Pine Valley daughter Cassandra Foster, appeared on the Fox series opposite her former TV mom in the fall of last year.
At the time, DaCosta enthused, "It's such an honor to be working with [Debbi] again in such a different capacity, not as mother and daughter, but as niece and auntie, who are really more like sisters."
Added Morgan, "I was so excited. Working with Yaya back on All My Children, it was like working with this young little girl, you know? And now, I'm with this mature woman, beautiful, serving it up. And I'm like, 'Oh, my God. What do we have here?'"
